The Minister of State and Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, set this Monday, in an order published in the Official Gazette, that the maximum amount of the public guarantee to help young people buy a house is 1.2 billion euros.
The news had already been anticipated, stating that the amount set by the minister is for the next two years (2025 and 2026). This measure aims to allow young people between 18 and 35 years old to obtain financing up to 100% of the purchase value, provided that certain conditions are met. For example, the State guarantee cannot exceed 15% of the transaction value.
The next step towards the operationalization of this measure, which should be completed by the end of the year, is to define what portion will go to each of the 17 credit institutions that have signed up to the guarantee. Although the 1.2 billion euros are earmarked for 2025 and 2026, the Government has stated that it may request additional funding from the Directorate-General for the Treasury and Finance if access by eligible young people is significant and more money is needed to ensure that no one is left out.
