Dehumidifier - Secrets to save light and combat humidity

What is the use of the air dehumidifier?

The air dehumidifier is an appliance that transforms the excess air of a certain division into water. All done through a fan that allows you to condense wet air.

In reality, it is an effective and intelligent way to eliminate excess air from spaces, keeping the house with a feeling of constant freshness, especially in this time of intense cold.

The water produced in this process is stored in the appliance reservoir and can be reused in certain household chores, as a way to save energy and water at the end of each use.

How to choose the appropriate dehumidifier?

When choosing the most appropriate dehumanizer, take into note the following aspects:

  • Water tank capacity: the dehumidifier water reservoir should be sufficient to eliminate the humidity levels of a given division.

  • Extraction/humidification capacity: the amount of moisture that the equipment can extract is important for optimized operation. Most air dehumidifiers can extract up to 10 liters per day;

  • Mobility: once your tasks have been completed in a division, it may be advantageous to take the dehumidifier to another place. That's why you should choose a dehumidifier with wheels and handles or a compact dehumidifier, easy to arrange when it is not necessary;

  • Timer: the dehumidifier can turn on or off by itself at the set times, so that energy savings are assured. Some have various speed programs and even remote control;

  • Dehumidifier with humidostat: with these characteristics the appliance is able to measure humidity, turning off immediately as soon as it reaches the determined value;

  • Noise level: some dehumidifiers may be noisy, so the lower the noise level, the higher the quality of life. Up to 50 dB you will have an excellent level of acoustic comfort.

Finally, it is essential to take into account the energy efficiency of the dehumidifier. The higher the energy class of this device, it can be efficient and also help with electricity expenses.

What size should be the space where to place the dehumidifier?

Another point to consider before buying a dehumidifier is the size of the place where it will be placed.

The recommended area (per m2) of the dehumidifier is usually indicated in its specifications and should be respected for the best results. Dimensões do espaço e capacidade de extração recomendada:

Between 20 and 25 m2 -> 10 and 12 liters/day Between 25 and 35 m2 -> 12 and 16 liters/day

Between 35 and 40 m2 -> 16 and 20 liters/day

It is advisable to leave the dehumidifier between 3 and 4 days in each division. In laundries it can accelerate the drying of clothes and in offices it can help protect home equipment and act against fungi.

What is the best time to use the dehumidifier?

To achieve the proper result, the dehumidifier must be turned on between 10 and 12 hours a day.

Those who have the simple hourly rate can use the dehumidifier at any time of the day, since the price of the electricity consumed will always be identical.

Consumers with a two-hourly rate should use the dehumidifier in empty hours, when the price of kWh is lower.

Cheaper hours of light

Monday to Friday

22h to 00h

00h to 07h

Saturday

00h to 09h30

13h to 18h30

22h - 00h

Sunday

00h - 24h

To know the energy consumption of a dehumidifier it is essential to know its electrical power. To calculate the consumption of a dehumidifier uses the formula:

Power (W) x Time (h) = Watt-hour (Wh) ÷ 1000 = kWh/day

Let's look at the case of the Samsung Ax34R3020Ww dehumidifier (34m2 45Db) with 30W power that stays on for 12 hours a day. The calculation will be:

30W x 12h = 360 Watt-hour (Wh) ÷ 1000 = 0,36 kWh/day

If we consider the kWh price of €0.15, then we just multiply by the 0.36 kWh spent per day to know the price of electricity consumed by the dehumidifier.

In this way, €0.054 per day will be spent, that is, €1.62 per month, for leaving the dehumidifier connected to electricity for 12 hours.

The difference will not be very significant on the invoice, but you should realize that the electrical power of these devices is not always the same. Don't forget to make the sum for the remaining appliances in your house to know the cost of the expenses.
